Bird watching
The Anchor River has a delta area near the mouth which supports a
variety of birds. The bald eagles are permanent residents, while other
bird species migrate through at different times. The Sand Hill cranes,
geese and ducks arrive in the spring (May) and again in the fall (September).
Several species of ducks call the river their summer home along with
snipes, gulls, kittiwakes and loons.
The Top of the Rock Lodge is centrally located so you
never have to go far to experience nature at its best. The Kenai flats
are one hour away, Homer is 20 minutes south.
You can also take tours that will get you up close and
personal. Four wheeler and boat tours are recommended. A favorite
easy boat tour will bring you to Gull island. Gull island is a bird
sanctuary. Early May through July there are thousands of kittiwakes,
gulls, cormorants and puffins that nest here. The island is near the
end of the Homer Spit, so it does not long to get there. Most tours
cost $39.00 to $59.00.

Wildlife viewing
Wildlife viewing can be done right from the lodge. Bald Eagles and
moose are always nearby. If you are in the mood for a tour we can
connect you with several quality companies that will take you in the
back country by four wheeler or hop in a boat and cruise Kachemak
bay for some awesome ocean life. On the boats you will see ocean birds,
otters, whales and an occasional bear on the shore. On the four wheeler
tours you will see moose, bears, wolves, fox, rabbits, Ptarmigan and
spawning salmon in the rivers. These tours run from $39.00 per person
to $175.00 per person.

Hiking
Hiking on the Kenai Peninsula is very popular. There are so many trails
that I will not even try to name them. The State, the Kenai Borough
and all of the cities have trails. You can hike on the beaches, take
trails into the woods, take trails to glaciers or take a trail up
to the top of a mountain. We have water taxis that can take you across
the bay to hike. One of the trails takes you to a glacier lake where
you can get in a kayak and paddle to the glacier. We have no poison
oak or ivy, so all you need to remember is DO NOT grab the devils
club and watch out for bears!! I know all of the water taxi companies,
so I can get you set up if you want to go across the bay.
Kayaking
Kayaking in Kachemak Bay is very popular. There are several companies
that rent kayaks. They will also take you across the bay to some of
the most beautiful secluded coves and come back at a specified time.
There are also cabins across the bay that can be rented for an overnight
stay. You will be kayaking with otters and birds in some of the most
beautiful scenery in the world.
WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU BOOK EARLY AS THE PRIME MONTHS BOOK UP
